The Days of Aubergine

With a kind and warm smile she handed me the bag saying: “I cooked something for you”, I didn’t know what was in the bag but I was pleased by the piece of paper which she gave me as I was already searching for the poem in it.

Aubergine was the most common Iraqi dish during the Embargo; it had a place on the table in every meal.

I have a lot of memories from those hard days; they represent 12 years in my life, from a child playing football in our area to a teenager with a fundamentalist Islamic mentality, and eventually; a young student doctor with an unexplained passion toward the casualty unit of Al-Yarmook hospital!

In each period of those, there were many stories about people’s sufferance and how hard their life was; still I remember many of those stories as I was involved in some of them.

In the period 1991 to 1996, we were living in a local area for the teaching staff of Basra University, people there represented the highly educated slice of the society in Basra and most of them got their qualifications from the western world.

The income of all the governmental employee was not enough, many of our neighbors had to look for another source of money, some of them had little shops, others worked as taxi drivers and one of them started selling cigarettes as all what he could prepare was a small table in the market.
Those who couldn’t find another source of income started gradually selling their furniture or their wives’ jewels to provide food for their children.
My family was a bit in a better condition as we were blessed by relatives living outside Iraq, yet, that doesn’t mean we didn’t have to sell anything.

Many of the academic professions had to run away as they couldn’t cope with that life, however, not everyone had such chance as it was an illegal action.

According to the watchword “Necessity is behind invention” or as Iraqis say it “Necessity is the mother of invention” many alternatives started to appear in our life; meat was the first to disappear and was replaced by different things like legumes and vegetables, sugar was expensive so it was replaced by molasses, it was common to see small chicken coop in the garden, people tried to reuse their old clothes after doing some changes on them.
Moreover tiers were so expensive so our neighbor used to sew them adding some screws!

People had to struggle with the flour; the provided flour was of a very bad quality and small quantity, bread was dark and not tasty at all, many families including mine had their own kiln to deal with this problem by themselves.

Yet, not everything could be replaced, there were things which were completely absent like banana, I heard many funny stories about children who had the chance to see it but they didn’t know how to eat it, I know one of them in person who commented on it saying “they gave something like aubergine”!

In 1996 we moved to live in Baghdad; the stander of living there was much better; at least water and electricity were available; things which were not available in Basra.

We were walking in the local public market when an elderly man with small grocery; talked to my father about his sufferance, and of course without saying any taboo “political” word; “Until when? It’s too hard now, we can’t tolerate anymore” the man looked so exausted when he said that.
My father replied trying to comfort the man: “Allah is generous, let’s hope, didn’t you live the days of Rasheed Al-Gailani ?
“I lived those days when I was in the age of your son, yet, it didn’t take so long as these days and it wasn’t like this” the man replied.
Days of Rasheed Al-Gailani were in 1941 when there was a revolution and chaos, obviously; it was also a hard period.

Despite the fact that life in Baghdad was much better, many people had to suffer for different reasons; our next door neighbors were a family whose father was a teacher in the morning and a shopkeeper in the afternoon while the mother was teacher in the morning and a dressmaker for the rest of the day, still they were unable to provide good food and clothes for their four children.
I’m still captured by the shout of a hungry boy who knocked our door asking for food, my sister gave him a chicken sandwich, he just shouted happily “DIJAAAAJ” which means chicken, it seemed has hadn’t tasted it for a long time.

Lack was not only in food, many drugs were unavailable especially drugs for treating cancer, I can’t forget the only time in my life I heard my father admitting that he couldn’t control his tears, it was when he heard about an engineer lady who laid on the ground kissing the foot of another cancer patient to give her the doses she needed to survive as he had plenty of them.

As soon as I became a medical student, I saw many people who were so poor and unable to pay the5$ charge to be admitted into the hospital, I examined one of them who was a young man working as a laborer, small worms were getting out of the deep wound in his hand, yet, he couldn’t afford for treating himself, I realized that we were living without dignity.
Even doctors were not well, their whole salary was not more than 30$ in the best circumstances and including the overtime and everything, many of them used to live on that sum of money!
Corruption escalated at that time and we had to bribe people to make things easier.

Isn’t it a fact that what we live nowadays are the consequences of our life in those days?
It’s also a fact that those who claimed liberating us were pleased to make us suffering on those days?

While watching T.V, I was thinking about those days and how horrible they were, a lady called Hibba Bassam was talking on Al-Jazeera English channel, she was describing her sufferance in Baghdad, she couldn’t find any reason to go on, she mentioned that life is so horrible, her words don’t go far away from what Nasooh said yesterday when I phoned him “It doesn’t matter with me if I have to stop working as a doctor for the rest of my life, I just want to leave this country”.
I kept thinking about their words, I’m sure both of them would prefer eating Aubergine frequently rather than living this terror.

I linked what they said to the words of the elderly man we met 11 years ago, I wonder if they consider our the life 11 years ago as good life, I worry of seeing someone after 10 years consider nowadays life in Baghdad much better than his life.

Still and despite all the sufferance we had been through, I’m in love with aubergine! It reminds me of my country which I really miss, it reminds me of my family, we didn’t eat meat as frequent as we do now but we were together.
Moreover; it’s the thing which stood beside Iraqis when the whole world didn’t care,
I wonder if there is something standing beside Iraqis nowadays.

I enjoyed eating the special dish she cooked for me in our Iraqi way “TEPSI” and yet, it was with meat this time!
I’ll leave this poem which I really like and I got with the dish:

A Reminiscence For Tomorrow

“Never think about money, whatever you need just tell me &I’ll send you, we have enough to support you and should our circumstances change, I’ll sell my jewels and support you, please try to enjoy your life”.

These are the words my mother keeps saying whenever we have a chat. Her dream is to see her only son a good doctor and working in the U.K not anywhere else!

I’ve never done anything good to my mother, I was the one who informed her about her mother’s death, the thing which hurt her so much, and however, I’m always her favorite only son.

It has been more than ten months now since I’ve left them, by all the means it’s not a long time, yet, it’s not easy at all.

When I left Iraq, I had a plan and I was clear about the direction I was going. My immediate concern was that I knew that I had to do exams to enable registration in the medical council in the UK, so I started preparing myself as soon as I arrived.

I had to organize somewhere to live, arranging my life and doing things I was not used to doing and also adapt and learn other skills which I did not possess such as cooking, cleaning and other things. Doing the housework is not a great matter; I’m convinced that I cook a delicious food, as I’m the only one who eats what I cook.

Yet, there were things which I didn’t pay attention too and it now seems that they are vital. I could imagine living on my own, but being entirely alone and not having any friends is another thing, which I didn’t think about and it’s really hard. There are many people around me, they are doing their best to help and support me, yet, I feel they are putting themselves out for me, which makes me feel guilty. To have friends is another thing.

At the beginning, I thought it would be quite easy to find friends, but gradually I realized a fact that I’m living in a country where Iraqis in particular are grouped according to their religious attitude. Those who are strict are being grouped together going to mosques for praying and celebrating religious events, most of them don’t like singing, prefer sexual demarcation, and to an extent are sectarian, after one bad experience I decided to stay away.

The other Iraqis have their own groups and not ready to widen their closed circles. I had to stay alone, I am naturally a person who prefers being isolated or alone, rather than facing troubles or being rejected.

To avoid being depressed or suffering homesickness, I focused on my studies, I did my best to pass the first exam which is the language one, I was attending three classes a day from 9 a.m to 6 p.m, after three and a half months I got my results, I scored higher than what I needed, it was a great surprise, as many doctors I know had to repeat it many times while I passed it the first time and with a high score.

I phoned my mother immediately, she was so pleased and her tears interrupted her words “Wonderful, I really ……miss…you”. I was so pleased, but I turned right and left to find no one else is happy, all those who care were far away, I kept calling people to tell them, instead of them calling me to congratulate me on my achievement. Two days later, I took flowers, cards and chocolate to my school, pretending that I was saying goodbye, in fact; I wanted to see people being happy for my success, I tried to find happiness even if it was a mocked one, and maybe; I wanted to feel that I am someone who people care about.

Without any delay, I booked for the second exam, the time interval before the exam was only six weeks and I knew that the exam was really hard, yet, I accepted the challenge, I just wanted to please my mother by any means, studying hard during the six weeks didn’t help. I took the exam and found out several weeks later that I had failed the exam and for only two marks out of 200, my mother denied being sad and asked me not to be disheartened, yet, I was alone and no one was beside me.

After being through such events and after it had been seven months away from my family, I thought that it would never matter for me wherever I am, as I will be always alone.

I packed and left to a district town in North England to study and get training in the local hospital there. My life there was about going to the hospital and coming back to stay in my room till the next day, no Internet, no T.V, and the town is always silent after 5p.m., as people stay indoor or go to pubs and clubs.

The worst time was at the beginning of April, I got toothache, which I foolishly tried to resist, it was a “tooth abscess” which caused me horrible pain for two nights and unluckily this occurred during the weekend when no dentist was available. I couldn’t sleep; I kept banging my head into the pillow trying to stop that pain, as tablets didn’t help. At that moment, I could understand what being out of the zone means, at that moment I prayed to god, I begged him to end my life as I realized how horrible it’s going to be.

When everyone was celebrating the Easter, I was stuck to my books as I didn’t have anywhere to go, and I didn’t have anyone to celebrate with.

Since that time I have moved again, I did the exam again on the end of April; I did my best this time, now I’m living somewhere else which is much better than the horrible town.

Many things have been changed, my desire in living has sharply declined, sorrow and sadness have been close friends to me, I don’t feel that I’m the good one I used to be, I don’t know why I’m going on, I don’t cook well and I eat more canned food as I’m unable to enjoy the taste or even to differentiate it, I don’t eat a lot, I eat to survive.

I talk to myself most of the times, sometimes I hardly control a smile on my face which comes after seeing a flash from the past, I stop it because I don’t want people to think that I’m crazy.

People consider me keen as I go to hospital during the weekends and Bank holiday! In fact I don’t have anything else to do, holidays for me are not more than days when some shops and institutes are closed, and yet it doesn’t make any difference in my life.

I’ll get my results within few days; I’ll be lonely again as my flat mate is on holiday, I don’t care about myself as I’m already lost, yet I really would love to please my mother. Sometimes I talk to God asking him not to make me suffer the shame of failing again, I ask him to make me pass not for myself but for all those who care about me, they deserve to be pleased.

Walking to and from the hospital everyday, with a bowed neck, clenched shoulders and hands in my sides pockets, I think about everything, about Iraq, people are being killed massively everyday, people are suffering more and more, will I have the chance to see it again? How will it look like? I think about my family, my friends and everyone there.

I think about my results and what will happen, will I keep facing the crucial events lonely? Repeating that exam was really horrible, will I be able to sit it for a third time? Doesn’t that mean there is something wrong with me? Should I keep telling my mother the bad news? Should I be ashamed by disappointing everyone?

Thinking that glass is half full, I try to be optimistic, isn’t it the whole life like that? I used to say: “The miseries of today are the reminiscences of tomorrow” I’m sure I’ll cross over this problem; there are thousands of really catastrophic events in this world, it’s a type of arrogance to consider such silly things as problems, at least I’m living very well and I always have the chance to try again, moreover I always have someone who is ready to help me, I shouldn’t get worried anymore…………I’m scared!

A Proof of Identity

One day Saddam decided that there were thousands who weren’t really Iraqis and shouldn’t stay in Iraq anymore, without thinking about what would happen to them, he took his decision and threw them on the borders after confiscating all what they had.

At that time Ali was only four years old; his family didn’t face this problem as they were “pure!!” Iraqis, The guy was such a clever student and eventually he scored the highest and was the first in his school of medicine, the thing which needs more than great effort.

Being pleased by his achievement, Ali decided to go further in his education to get an academic profession in his hospital and university, living his dream he was thinking about being an orthopedic surgeon.

All of a sudden; Ali was rejected! Like a mad he looked for an explanation, he was informed that his grandmother was born in “Ahwaz” the land which we kept considering it as Arabic, and for such security cause he wasn’t eligible for post graduation studies.
I advised him to speak to the minister of Higher Education, he did and the surprise was that the minister told him that he can’t do anything as he has a security issue.

After 26 years living as an Iraqi; Ali realized that he was not or in a proper word he was deprived from being so. And yet, that wouldn’t excuse him from doing his military services!

I remember how Ali was looking like at that time; he was quiet, working for three days in continuity, and was thinking all the time without being able to complain.

My grandmother was Iranian, not from an Iranian origin but an Iranian whose family had left Iran to live in Iraq before she was born, she kept saying that she was Iranian, yet, neither my mother nor anyone of her siblings had ever considered themselves as Iranians, I’ve never heard my grandmother wishing the Iranians to win the war against Iraq or to control it, all what I heard from her is her love to Iraq and Iraqis.

During the war in 2003 she was in her mid seventies, she begged my aunts to let her go to Iraq saying that “let me die with them, is it worthy to live if they die?!”

Her last wish was a grave in Iraq for which she kept praying to Allah asking the Almighty to make her end in Iraq and not anywhere else, I remember how like a child she pretended to be sick just to stay in Iraq when they tried to take her with them.

The story of Ali and the story of my grandmother brought many questions into my mind, who is Iraqi and who is not? What are the guidelines to decide who is Iraqi? Is it a matter of documents, names, families or accent? Is there anyone who has the right of deciding who deserves to be Iraqi and who doesn’t?

No doubt that Saddam was Iraqi, yet did that give him some mercy on Iraqis? It’s not only about Saddam as there are many others who pretended to be patriotic and all what they did was killing and stealing. Are they more Iraqis than (Margaret Hassan), who spent her life helping people in Iraq and eventually was kidnapped and killed?
That lady passed through all the horrible things we’ve faced, is there anything which deprive her from the right of being Iraqi?

I felt so little when a lady here told me that she considers herself coward and selfish as she left Iraq instead of staying there helping people.
She didn't talk about the help she is giving to me and many others, she didn't care how muchg she gave, she thought about what she didn't give, wasn't she rejected once? Isn't it great to see such people nowadays?
Have I done anything for Iraq or Iraqis apart from talking about them?

While walking along the riverside, I kept thinking about all the above mentioned, I wonder why our patriotism is measured by loyalty to person or to sector not the country itself?
Meanwhile my mobile rang, she was my mother, their life is just getting worse and they haven’t got electricity for 20 days, I didn’t know how to reply, not so long after that I received another call, a friend of mine telling me that her 75 years old father in law was kidnapped and killed in Basra for no explained reason.

I have to admit that I’ve encouraged all those who I know to leave the country as soon as possible, maybe it sounds bad, however, I’d like to save their lives.

Nowadays; to be Iraqi is not about living there, it’s not about burning yourself and destroying your life and family, if those who regret leaving Iraq stayed there, they wouldn’t do anything a part from adding their names to the long list of sorrow, furthermore, they might deprive the country from their help if things get better.

“Firishteh” is the best example I have for being Iraqi and away from Iraq at the same time, that woman becomes really mad when she talks about Iraq, she is ready to shout or even to swear defending it, I like looking at her in such situations; she just gives warmth and love while speaking about Iraq.

No one could explain how it’s possible for a woman to bring up her children as Iraqis unless she is already Iraqi, she should be in love with Iraq to do so. Is there any proof stronger than being in love with Iraq in such circumstances?
I don’t think documents or names give identity, only love and loyalty do so.

As far as I’m concerned; I don’t need documents to know who Iraqi is, I recognize Iraqis by their warmth which comes from their love to Iraq and its people.

I wonder if I’ll live until the day I see loyalty to Iraq becomes the superior proof of identity for being Iraqi and getting the equal opportunities.
